Roast the finely chopped nuts without fat in a pan.
Chop the onion and garlic and saute in the oil in a pot. Cut the tomatoes (peel if necessary) into small cubes. Add the nuts, herbs and tomatoes to the onions and garlic in the pot and simmer for 15 minutes. Add tomato paste or ajvar as needed (the amount depends on how liquid the sauce is), season with salt and pepper and possibly the chili and simmer for another 10 minutes.
Serve the sauce with pasta or take for a lasagna.
